Sadly this is one of  the last pictures ever taken of Artur Lowe.

After a career spanning over 30 years, including playing one of the greatest television comedy characters of all time, Captain Mainwaring in 'Dad's Army', Arthur took the lead role in the play 'Home at Seven'.

This portrait was taken backstage shortly before a Wednesday matinee in South London on 8th April 1982.

A few days later the play moved to Birmingham where on the 14th April Arthur was sadly found unconcious in his dressing room having suffered the onset of a stroke.

He died a few hours later in the early hours of 15th April 1982.
